Любые солнечные часы имеют циферблат со шкалой и часовую стрелку, называемую гномоном. При этом по их ориентации солнечные часы подразделяются на горизонтальные, вертикальные и экваториальные. Существует множество их модификаций, такие как ступенчатые, кольцевые, пластинчатые, зеркальные, бифилярные и другие.
Солнечные часы это не обязательно диск, имеющий перпендикулярный гномон. Так, циферблат может быль полусферой или кольцом. Универсальными экваториальными часами можно пользоваться на всех широтах. В их конструкции участвуют два перпендикулярных друг другу кольца и гномон. Для определения времени необходимо выставить широту по шкале на одном из колец и установить дату. Затем часы поворачивают вокруг вертикальной оси, до появления на циферблате точки, показывающей время. В этот момент одно кольцо ориентировано на север вдоль меридиана, а второе — параллельно плоскости экватора.
В горизонтальных солнечных часах плоскость циферблата не перпендикулярна гномону, который должен быть параллелен земной оси, а также указывать на север, то есть угол между ними равен широте местности. Горизонтальные часы удобны и просты в установке. Для их использования на другой широте достаточно изменить угол и направить гномон на север.
В Древнем Египте были сконструированы разные модели солнечных часов, например, с горизонтальной шкалой, которая составляла угол 90 градусов с плоскостью местного меридиана, а гномонами их являлись обелиски, высота которых обычно достигала нескольких метров. Для того чтобы по ним узнать время, использовалось направление, которое указывала тень от гномона. Еще одни солнечные часы, именуемые «ступенчатыми», имели две поверхности, наклоненные на восток и на запад и поделенные на уровни. При движении солнца тень перемещалась с одной ступени на другую, и время определялось по ее длине.
В Центральной Европе до XV века широкое распространение получили настенные вертикальные солнечные часы, гномон которых был горизонтальным. Правда точность определения времени по ним была невысока.
В то же время существовало несколько вариантов дорожных хронометров, например, кольцевые солнечные часы. Они представляли собой два кольца, в одном из которых было отверстие для прохождения солнечного луча, а на другое наносились шкалы месяцев и часов. Были еще пластинчатые часы, в конструктивное решение которых входили две, иногда три, одинаковые пластинки, имевшие прямоугольную форму и скрепленные между собой, при этом на нижней устанавливался компас.
Имеется описание средневековых восьмигранных палок с четырьмя сквозными отверстиями в ручках, в которые для определения времени надо было вставлять металлические стержни. Примерно тогда же появились оконные хронометры. Они относились к вертикальным. Принцип работы солнечных часов заключался в использовании окна ратуши или храма в качестве циферблата с нанесенной полупрозрачной шкалой. Это давало возможность узнавать время, находясь внутри помещения. Зеркальные солнечные часы использовали отраженный с помощью зеркала солнечный луч, который они направляли на стену здания, где находился циферблат.
